The meeting of the Villa Grove Board of Education was called to order on April 18 at 6 p.m.
The board quickly moved through approval of the consent agenda, and moved to reports from the school’s administration.
Superintendent Carol Munson reported on boiler repairs at the school. Munson also provided an update on the guidance from Governor Pritzker on COVID-19 sick leave protections for vaccinated staff. The guidance states that “House Bill 1167, will keep students and teachers safe in the classroom without penalizing vaccinated school employees for taking COVID-required leave for themselves or their children.” It requires that school districts pay educational support personnel and contractors during any school closure and provides paid administrative leave to vaccinated employees for purposes related to COVID-19.
Elementary Principal Bobby Beck followed with his report, congratulating students of the month Jaiden Williams (kindergarten), Payton Mason (first grade), Khloe Fonner (second grade), Eli Carroll (third grade), Rylyn Burris (fourth grade), Ellie Oberg (fifth grade), and Max Wilson (sixth grade). He then stated that kindergarten registration on March 30 went well, with 33 in attendance; third through sixth grade had completed reading and math IAR testing; and that fifth grade was going to finish up the Illinois Science Assessment after spring break. Beck then thanked the PTO and staff for a wonderful PTO Family Fun Night and stated that it was a great night and had a wonderful turnout. He stated that they had begun discussion of the summer recovery program that would be held in June, and that they were working on details for the Blue Devil Classic to be held on May 13. Beck ended by stating some upcoming dates at the school: 1st-3rd grade Spring Concert/Art Fair on April 26, Honors Banquet on May 3, PTO Meeting with board elections on May 4, Prom on May 7, Freshman Orientation on May 9 from 5 to 7 p.m. He said that on May 10, 5-12th grade will hold their band and choir concert; on May 11, the eighth graders are going to Springfield and the HS Band and Choir will go to Beef and Boards; Little Blue Devil Classic on May 13; Board Meeting on May 16; Seniors’ last day on May 20; Eighth grade promotion on May 26; Finals May 26-27. Other upcoming events include the Alumni Banquet on May 28, HS Graduation on May 29 at 2 p.m., No School on May 30, Students’ last day of attendance on May 31, Teacher’s Institute on June 1, and June 13-16 is the Disney Trip.
Junior High and High School Principal Sara Jones followed with her report to the board. She began with a congratulations to Morgan Smith, the April Student of the Month; the FFA Parliamentary Procedure Team for competing at the district competition; and Morgan Smith for being recognized as the top floor member during the Parliamentary Procedure competition. She thanked Mrs. Schable and the junior high Student Council for hosting a fun neon dance for students, thanked all of the teachers who helped proctor the IAR and PSAT/SAT testing, as well as Mr. Sims for organizing all of the tests for high school students. Jones additionally thanked Mrs. Werts and the ACES students who presented at Rotary and Mrs. Cardiff on the wonderful performance of the Grimm Fairy Tales. Jones ended noting some upcoming dates at the school: Honors Banquet on May 3, FFA Banquet on May 4, Prom on May 6, Post Prom on May 7, Freshman Orientation from 5 to 7 p.m. on May 9, Band and Choir Concert on May 10. Additional dates include: 8th graders to Springfield on May 11, HS Band and Choir to Beef & Boards on May 11, Little Blue Devil Classic on May 13, Board meeting on May 16, Last day for Seniors on May 20, JH Science Canoe Trip on May 24, 8th grade promotion on May 26, Finals on May 26 and 27, Alumni Banquet on May 28, Graduation on May 29 at 2 p.m., No School on May 30, Last day of attendance on May 31, and a Teacher’s Institute on June 1.
The board also:
* Heard from Pat Sigler of the Alumni Committee to request use of the new gym for the Alumni Banquet.
* Approved the regular and closed session meeting minutes of the March 21 meeting.
* Approved authorization of the payment of bills.
* Approved the monthly treasurer’s report.
* Approved moving to closed session to discuss the appointment, employment, compensation, resignation, discipline, performance, or dismissal of specific employees of the public body or legal counsel for the public body, including hearing testimony on a complaint against an employee of the public body or against legal counsel for the public body to determine its validity as well as discuss specific students.
* Adjourned until the May 16 board of education meeting.
