Here are the VGHS results of the recent regional and sectional Academic Challenge in Engineering & Science (formerly WYSE) competitions. Villa Grove qualified for the state finals as a team for the first time with these results.

Coach Linda Werts was understandably impressed by the performance. “This is year number 12 for me as a Coach for WYSE/ACES. I have sent students to the state competition, but this is my first year going to state as a team! I am uber excited and super proud of these kids,” Werts said.
Maci Clodfelder legged out two doubles and scored twice to lead Villa Grove to a 10-6 Lincoln Prairie Conference home win over Cumberland on April 4. Alison Pangburn set the table from her lead off position, going 4-5 with a double and two RBI’s. Cleanup hitter Kaylee Arbuckle continued her strong season at the plate, going 3-5 with a double, two RBI’s and two runs scored to help the cause. Madison Hinds stepped up in a starting role, going 3-3 with a pair of runs scored, and Emma Bratten-Noice went 3-4 with an RBI and a run scored, and Addisyn Wilson made her lone hit count, driving in two.
Alex Brown was the benefactor of the offensive largesse, scattering eight hits and giving up six runs (four earned) while making seven Pirates walk the plank on strikeouts in a complete game effort.
Sam Bender scattered four hits, allowing one run and roping seven broncos with strikeouts in a complete game four hit effort to lead Villa Grove to a 13-1 4 inning pasting of Cerro Gordo Bement on April 4. Everyone in the VG lineup scored at least one run in the win. Peyton Smith went 3-3 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored and an RBI to power the offensive explosion. Liam Barr went 2-3 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs to help out, while Luke Zimmerman was 2-4 with two RBI’s and a run scored. Tyler Wilson drove in two runs and scored two himself, and Brady Clodfelder chipped in with two RBI’s and two runs scored of his own. Bender and Carson Block contributed two runs scored each for the Blue Devils in the Lincoln Prairie Conference win.
Swamped by Storm
Cooper Clark went 2-3 with three RBI’s and Liam Barr and Luke Zimmerman each went 2-4 with a double, but it wasn’t enough as the Devils gave up four runs in the bottom of the sixth in an 11-7 loss to Salt Fork on April 7. Sam Bender, Gavin Kiser, Peyton Smith, Tyler Wilson and Brady Clodfelder each scored single tallies, and Clodfelder drove in a pair. Clark got tagged with the loss in relief of Clodfelder, giving up five runs in three innings, while fanning three. Clodfelder got the start, allowing five runs in two and a third, striking out four. Parker Knierem pitched 2/3 of an inning, allowing no runs or hits and fanning one.

Seventh grade girls take fourth
Evalice Callison finished first in the High Jump, first in the 200m and fifth in the 1600m to lead Villa Grove to a fourth place finish at the Unity JH invite on April 4. The 4×100 relay team, consisting of Rebekka Bloom, Lyndsay Zoch, Lauren Carter and Callison also took first place. Baylee Martin soared 12’11 1/2 inches to take first place in the long jump. Lauren Carter finished second in the long jump, and Martin ran fifth in the 100m to round out the scoring.
Eighth grade girls finish fourth
Ryan Lillard and Piper Kiser finished 1-2 in the shot put to lead the Blue Devils eighth grade contingent to a fourth place finish at the Unity invite. Hayden Thomas soared 13’11” to take first in the long jump and sprinted to a first place finish in the 200m as well. The 4x100m relay team, consisting of Piper Kiser, Eva Piercy, Baylee Martin and Hayden Thomas finished fourth, and Eva Piercy and Lillard finished third and fifth respectively in the 800m.
Seventh grade boys place fourth
Jacob Golightly placed first in the 400m and third in the long jump to lead VGJH. Teammate Landon Chambers soared 15’3” to win the long jump, Eamon Reedy finished fifth in the shot put and blazed to a second-place finish in the 100m dash. Other points earners for the Blue Devils included Logan Hauersperger (third in 100m).
Eighth grade boys place fourth
Buoyed by Thomas Vandeventer’s second place finish in the shot, the blue devils took fourth in the Unity invite on April 4. Villa Grove’s 4x100m relay team, which was made up of Jacob Golightly, Jackson Gilles, Zane Hosler and Landon Chambers, finished third, and Hosler ran fifth in the 200m.
