TCHS Drama Club sure to thrill in Disney’s “Descendants”

By Kendra Hennis
The Tuscola High School Drama Club is gearing up for this year’s spring musical, Disney’s “Descendants.” Disney’s “Descendants,” released in 2020, stars the teenage children of some of Disney’s favorite villains as they adjust to life. TCHS Drama Director Johanna Steffens said, “It is an ensemble show with so many fun and iconic parts. It features the same beloved characters and hit songs from popular Disney films. The show is sure to be popular with kids because most will know the characters and music, but parents will also enjoy the show and appreciate the message.” Steffens stated that this year’s production features over 30 students.

Steffens noted that she, musical director and choral teacher Hannah Church, and the students are very excited to be performing a Disney musical for the first time in the school’s history. She stated that, “Anyone who knows me well knows my family loves everything Disney. And although I love the classic fairytale musicals, I thought it would be fun to do something completely different. Hannah Church agreed.” She stated that the show has been a little more difficult due to the numerous sets and costumes. Steffens continued, “When doing a musical based on a movie, there are expectations. I like to make things my own, while still keeping with what the audience hopes to see. There are eighteen different set changes, which can be tricky on our small stage. We have gotten creative and used smaller pieces to represent the scenes rather than the larger set pieces we have used in the past. Costumes are also expected to look a certain way when dressing Disney characters. It has been a journey, but we are almost there and I think it is going to be a really fun look, both on stage and on actors.”

Steffens said that lights and sound equipment at the school has also proven to make things a bit more difficult, as the sound box is only equipped to mic a certain number of actors. She explained, “In a perfect world, all of our actors would have a microphone at all times, but we are kind of creating a mic map of who passes ofs their mic and when. Hannah Church will be playing the musical tracks through our sound system, which is also a new learning curve we only first experienced last year. However, it sounds amazing, especially for a show like this!”

As for her favorite part of the show, Steffens says, “My favorite part of the show are the characters. I love Disney and some of the classic characters with the modern spin is really fun. I love the finale and the ending message. With so much negativity in the world, this brings a positive outlook and is good for kids of all ages to see.”

“Descendants” performances will be held at Tuscola High School March 17, 18, and 19 at 7 p.m. and March 20 at 2 p.m. Tickets are currently available through GoFan. Seats are going quickly so it is advised that they are purchased in advance. If seats have not been sold out before a performance, a limited number of seats may be available for purchase at the door.
