The many Flags of the United States was the subject of speaker Carol Castellon, a member of the Alliance Chapter NSDAR in Champaign during the Stephen A. Douglas Chapter March meeting. More than 60 full-size flags (replicas) lined the room and, in the interest of time, Mrs. Castellon told the history of only 12-15 flags and their significance in our history. We learned that historically there have been 27 official designs of the American Flag. One interesting flag of only green and red stripes was the first Unofficial Flag of Illinois. Another replica was the Lincoln/Kennedy flag that draped the funeral train engine that carried President Lincoln back to Springfield and subsequently draped President Kennedy’s coffin also. [Mrs. Castellon would be happy to show and talk about these flags for schools or other organizations. (email: email@example.com)]
