2022 Douglas County Ag Center scholarship due February 20

The Douglas County Ag Center committee will once again be accepting applications for the Dale Bateman Memorial Ag scholarship. Applications are due by February 20th to the Farm Business Farm Management office in Tuscola.

Previous scholarship recipient, Samantha Crist from Atwood,  a veterinary medicine student in her final year of vet school at the University of Illinois, understands how important scholarships like this are.

“I cannot express the amount of gratitude I feel for both being chosen to receive this scholarship and to all of those who have supported me over the years. Scholarships like this help learning never end,” said Crist.

Growing up on a specialty crop farm, Crist took interest in agriculture at an early age. She credits her family who created a foundation for her love of agriculture.

After high school graduation, Crist entered the Parkland College Pathways program that prepares students to enter the University of Illinois. During that time period, Crist was commuting from Atwood and working two jobs. She credits the Ag Center scholarship for helping reduce the enormous debt a veterinary student bears to gain an education.

Crist will graduate in May 2022 and has learned so many things at school from trimming hooves and tusks to pregnancy checking livestock.

Crist is considering post graduate studies to further her education and career.

“These past four years of veterinary school have been intense, and I can’t wait to see where my career takes me,” Crist continued. “I love the breadth of medicine and the activities I get to take part in. I have done everything from assisting in neurosurgery to replacing a rectal prolapse in cows. Veterinary medicine is truly a career with limitless possibilities.”

Requirements for the Dale Bateman Memorial scholarship are: 1) resident of Douglas County; 2) course of study is agriculture; and 3) in at least their second semester or more as a student. Advanced degree Ag students are also encouraged to apply.

Interested college students need to supply college grade transcripts, resume, and information indicating career intent in the field of agriculture. Applications may be mailed or turned in by February 20th to: Dale Bateman Memorial Ag Scholarship c/o East Central IL Farm Business Farm Management at 900 South Washington St,, Suite B —  Tuscola, IL 61953.
