Maci Clodfelder hammered seven kills, Logan Lillard backed her up with six and Kayln Cordes dished out 21 assists, but the Devils fell in three sets, 25-23, 20-25, 21-25 to Argenta Oreana on September 9.
Boys HS Cross County
Kurt Zimmerman took fourth place over all to lead the Blue Devils to a second place finish at the Cumberland County meet on September 8. Chase White ran ninth and Caleb Wiessing finished 14th for the VG harriers.
Girls HS Cross Country
Emma Buesing powered her way to a first-place finish to lead VG to the team title at the Cumberland County meet on September 8. Kyleigh Price backed her running mate by finishing fourth, one step ahead of fifth place finisher Madison Logan. Scarlett Howard ran home in eighth place, Jobeth Crafton cruised in ninth position and Hailey Stutz rounded out the team scoring in tenth.
Jake Gilles fired a 44, good for third place overall, as the blue devils finished second to St. Anthony in a match at Tuscola’s Iron Horse course. Gavin Kiser fired a 47, Jesse Bessent tallied a 56, and Nic Wilson shot 57 to round out the Devils scoring.
Addie Wilson had a 60, and freshman Lila Bessent fired a 66 for the girls at Iron Horse. Classmate Olivia Jones shot a 69, Zoey Thompson-Burton had a 71, and Jada Chandler and Madison Hines each shot 72’s for the Devils.
The Blue Devils kicked off the 2021 IESA regional tournament on September 8 by whipping Schlarman 17-2 behind a one-hit pitching performance from Cam McGaughey. Izzy Dodd led the way at the plate, going 3-4 with a pair of doubles and five rbi’s. Hayden Thomas was her usual stellar self, going 3-3 with a triple, three Rbi’s and three runs scored. Lila Thompson-Burton also drove in two for VGJH.
Cam McGaughey and Piper Kiser teamed up on a five inning three hitter to lead the number three seed Blue Devils to a 13-3 pasting of number two seed Champaign St. Mathew on Saturday, September 11. Kiser doubled and scored twice, Hayden Thomas was 2-2 and scored four runs, Izzy Dodd tripled and scored twice, and McGaughey knocked in a pair of runs to lead the way offensively. Ella Schweighart and Ryan Lillard each had a base hit and scored a run for VGJH, and Lauren Carter and Lila Thompson-Burton each scored a run, as well.
Boys JH Cross Country
Nolan Shadwick placed sixth overall to lead VG to a second-place finish at the Heritage meet on September 7. Logan Hauersperger placed tenth, Robert Mitsdarfer came in 12th, Cole Cardiff ran 13th and fifth grader Miles Swigart placed 15th for the Blue and Gold.
Girls JH Cross Country
Eva Piercy placed tenth at the Heritage CC meet on September 7. Lilly-lynn Davis placed 15th, and Teaghan Henderson ran to an 18th place finish for VGJH.
Boys JH baseball
Mauled by Tigers
VGJH dropped an 11-3 decision to Westville on September 8. Thomas Vandeventer went 2-4 with a double and two runs scored, and Hayden Drake doubled and drove in a run for the Blue Devils. Zane Hosler and Jacob Golightly also had RBIs for VG. Jackson Smith was the hard luck loser, giving up five earned runs in six innings while striking out four. The Devils committed five errors, leading to six unearned runs in the contest.
