County Sheriff Blackwell announces June resignation

By Kendra Hennis
Douglas County Sheriff Joshua Blackwell recently announced that he is retiring from law enforcement effective June 30, 2021.

With his retirement, the Douglas County Board must now appoint a replacement for the position. At this time, the Republican Central Committee has not yet nominated who their candidate recommendation will be to the board. Once they do so, the board has the option of appointing that candidate and then that person will serve out the remainder of Blackwell’s term.

Blackwell noted that he is retiring because, “I have accepted a position in the private sector that will allow me to grow my career goals as well as my financial goals in life and provide better wellness benefits for my children. I’ve enjoyed my time serving the citizens of Douglas County, but this opportunity was just something I could not pass up.”

On Blackwell’s retirement, Douglas County Board Chairman Don Munson said, “I would say that we all were surprised, but after hearing Sheriff Blackwell’s reasons for his resignation, we all wish him well in his new endeavor and thank him for the superb job he has done and we are sure he will continue to do until his last day on June 30, 2021.”
