Getting to know new VG teacher Elaine Youhas

By Tony Hooker
Where did you grow and go to high school?

I grew up in Hammond, IL and attended Atwood-Hammond schools through graduation.

When did you decide that you wanted to be a teacher?

I had an incredible fifth grade teacher who invested in me and I felt a love for school for the first time. I had a desire to be that for other students and knew teaching elementary was what I was called to.

Where else have you taught/student taught?

My student teaching was completed in fourth grade at Cornerstone Christian Academy in Bloomington, IL. I then subbed for a full year after graduating before accepting my first full-time position. I have taught third grade for the last three years in Urbana, IL.

What do you like to do when you’re not at work?

When I am not at work I enjoy spending time outside or with family and friends. My husband and I are avid gardeners and hunters.

Who has been the biggest influence in your life?

My mother Tracy has been the biggest influence in my life. Her passion for serving others and her dedication to her faith have always inspired me. I have watched her selflessly give to others my entire life and it has deeply impacted the way I serve my students.

What is one thing that your students should know about you?

My students should know that I am fun-loving and have a desire for them to love the time they spend at school and in our classroom community. We have lots of learning to do, but my hope is they take away so much more than that from my classroom.
