2020 Villa Grove Spelling Bee News

The Villa Grove 5th through 8th grade Spelling Bee began on January 24, 2020 with 48 students competing in Round 1, which is the written competition.  This level of competition is open to any 5th-8th grade student who chooses to participate in the  written spelling of twenty selected words. 

This year seventeen students advanced to Round 2, which is the oral spelling competition and competed in the Thursday, January 30, 2020 event.  

After twenty-one rounds the winner was determined! Congratulations to 1st place winner- Gabbie Metheny (8th grade), 2nd place winner- Maddie Wicklander (7th grade), 3rd place winner- Allison Eisenmenger (6th grade), and Michael Green, Alternate- (7th grade). 

These top four students will advance to the Annual 5th through 8th grade Douglas County Spelling Bee, which will be held Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. at Yoder’s Restaurant in Arthur, IL. They will compete against students from Arthur, Arcola, and Tuscola.  

The top two winners of the Douglas County Spelling Bee will advance to the Regional Spelling Bee in March. 

Mrs. Olson is the local spelling bee coordinator, with Mr. Reno assisting as a pronouncer. Mr. Beck and Mrs. Olson served as judges for the event.
