My Personal Side

By Craig Hastings
How does someone get a cold when the temperature outside is 80 degrees plus? Well, I did this year. I can’t remember the last time I had a cold in say the last six years. You would think this is good news. After all, no cold in five or six years? What’s to complain about? I’ve been complaining for four days, because it’s been so long since I had a cold I’ve forgotten most of what I was about to endure.

I woke up on Wednesday morning with a little stuffiness in my nose. But not the dry feeling but more of a tingling/burning sensation way up in my sinuses. My first thought was once I was in the shower with a little steam rolling around the bathroom my nose would clear right up. Nope. I walked out my front door at about 6:50 a.m. and before I even got to my car my sinuses had swollen shut. Must be an allergy I thought to myself. No biggie. I’ve got plenty of over the counter remedies to treat bad air for of pollen and such. I’ll take one of them when I return home for lunch.

Bad idea. I wasn’t gone even an hour when my head started to ache and my nose continued to feel like someone had clamped vise grip pliers on it shutting off any air that might try to pass in or out. I always keep a little nose spray in the glove box of my police car so I tried a few squirts up each nostril. Zero penetration. That never happens; or in this case didn’t happen. This was the generic brand of a 12-hour spray, and I had no idea how long it had been lying in the glove box, so maybe it was expired and reduced to nothing but saline water.

Once at home for lunch I popped an Allegra allergy over-the-counter medication and two Motrin pills to help combat the headache that I never get. This would get me through the afternoon and once home I would lie on my bed and watch “The Five” on Fox News. I do this every weekday anyway but not usually in bed. It’s a relaxing program for me even though I’m exposed to all the latest embellished attacks on the White House residents by the left wing biased news media. This day I got to hear about impeachment of our president being ramped up because of a leaked phone call transcript with the Ukraine president. Shifty Schiff, Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, thinks it’s corrupt of President Trump to ask the Ukraine President for assistance in discovering where the 2016 election interference got started. It seems that Vice President Joe Biden and Son might be able to shed some light on this, but I guess if you run for president you can’t be investigated for past corruption! Will this stuff never end sent down the pipe from the left?!

Anyway back to my misery. I lied in bed Wednesday afternoon and did nothing but feel worse. I had a terrible night’s sleep due to my nose starting to run about 3 a.m. Thursday morning’s shower and no relief from the congestion and headache. I went to work anyway, because, physically, I was capable, I just didn’t feel good from my neck up. By the afternoon I was done. I came home and went right to my bedroom and turned on the TV. Today even the news of what the Washington Democrats were doing and saying couldn’t humor me.

I was off work Friday, still felt terrible, sinus headache, nose running, and now zero energy or motivation. I did have to take Shannon to Carle for a six-hour infusion treatment for her Multiple Sclerosis at 8 a.m., but I wouldn’t have to sit and wait at Carle with her. I stayed home all day with the exception of returning to Carle at 2:30 p.m. for Shannon. By now, I couldn’t taste or smell anything either. I had truly forgotten how miserable a simple head cold can be. Late night Friday my nose stopped running, which must have made the headache go away too.

This morning, Saturday, I was up at 7:30 and feeling pretty good. I had gotten a good night’s sleep and woke up early when I heard Payton get in the shower. I stayed up and followed behind him to Do It Best Home Center to purchase oil and a filter for Shannon’s car. I was making up for lost motivation, I think. I haven’t changed the oil in any of my vehicles for years. I’ve paid someone else to do it. Not today. I had to do something and her car was past due so once I returned home I changed the oil and filter in her car. There’s a specific smell of the old oil I’d long forgotten but immediately recognized. Yes, I could smell and taste again Saturday morning! After the oil change I did a couple of loads of laundry, washed dishes, took the garbage out, and made my bed. I was good again….until about 3 p.m.! I lost my energy rush for about four hours. Son Lukas came home from work around 8 p.m. and invited me to cruise around town awhile with him, which I did. I would have declined the three evenings prior, for sure. I’m writing this at 1 a.m. and feeling great. Maybe after I’m done I’ll dig my totes out that contain all of my Halloween decor and get started haunting my own house! Love Halloween!
