The Villa Grove junior high softball team is out to prove that last year’s appearance in the sectional finals was no fluke, as they’ve raced out to a 4-0 start to the 2019 campaign.
The Blue Devils got things off to a roaring start, scoring 16 runs in the first inning of their first contest and cruising to a 16-1 win over ALAH on August 10 at Paris Mayo. Alex Brown and Kaylee Hodis each drove in two runs, while Alison Pangburn, Logan Lillard, Chloe Reardon, Kayln Cordes, Kaitlyn Drew, and Ryan Barrett each scored twice. Brown picked up the win, allowing no hits in the three-inning contest.
Kaitlyn Drew had herself a day, going 3-3 and scoring 4 times, and pitching a complete game 1 hitter, fanning 13 without issuing a walk, as the Blue Devils defeated Paris Mayo 14-1 in their second contest on August 10. Alison Pangburn went 2-3 with a triple, and Logan Lillard and Chloe Reardon each scored a pair of runs for VGJH. Kayln Cordes tallied a pair of RBIs’ to help fuel the scoring barrage.
The Blue Devils made their 2019 home debut a memorable one as they defeated Tri County 15-0 in 4 innings on August 12. Alex Brown earned the 4-inning complete game win, allowing only one hit while striking out 10. Chloe Reardon went two for two with a triple, two RBI’s and a pair of runs scored to lead the VGJH attack. Alison Pangburn and Kaitlyn Drew each scored three times, Logan Lillard and Kayln Cordes each knocked in a pair of runs, and Ryan Barrett went 1-2 with an RBI and a run scored.
The Blue Devils proved that school size doesn’t matter, as they cruised to a 12-0 win over Urbana on August 16. Kaitlyn Drew fired a 5-inning no hitter, striking out 13 and walking just a pair of Urbana hitters, to earn the win. Piper Kiser was the offensive star of the game, going 3-3 with 4 RBI’s and scoring a pair of runs. Alex Brown, Chloe Reardon, and Kayln Cordes also tallied a pair of runs for VGHS, who return to action with four contests the week of August 19.
