Tuscola Community High School seniors J.D. Barrett and Ashton Smith have been named the DAR and SAR Good Citizens for the 2017-2018 school year.
The Stephen A. Douglas Chapter, National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Piankeshaw Chapter of the National Society of Sons of the American Revolution– both sponsors of the local program–each annually honor a student from every Douglas County high school as outstanding citizens of their respective senior classes. They will be special guests of honor at a luncheon Saturday, Feb. 9 at Douglas County Museum.
DAR winner Barrett, son of Angela Barrett and Kevin Barrett, has a 3.89 GPA and is ranked 20th in his class of 67.
In his senior year, Barrett participates in Cross Country, Track, Honors Choir, Drama Club, Scholastic Bowl, Student Council, Students Against Destructive Decisions, and National Honor Society. He volunteers as a mentor at North Ward, participated in Illinois Youth Senate, and serves as the senior class president.
Also, in his high school career, Barrett has participated in football, FFA, Future Business Leaders of America, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and Illinois Boys State.
SAR winner Smith, daughter of Michael and Shannon Smith, holds a 4.0 GPA is ranked first in his class of 67. In her senior year, Smith participates in Cross Country, Volleyball, Basketball, Softball, Track & Field, Scholastic Bowl, Band, Honors Choir, Spring Musical, Fall Play, Drama Club, Student Council, Students Against Destructive Decisions, and Future Business Leaders of America.
