Career Development Events Preparing Local Youth On Basic Farming Knowledge on Tuesday, Sept. 18 Tuscola FFA traveled to the 2018 Section 17 FFA Land Use contest in Champaign. Tuscola’s team members included: Gabby Gunther, Olivia Fulk, Morgan Jones, Katie Hutson, Daisy Mast, Parker Norman, and Marisa Poole. Students at the contest calculated slope percentages, erosion rates, soil texture, etc. during the contest. Students evaluated several locations during the contest and were able to practice in Dan Meyer’s field, a local farmer of Tuscola, before traveling to this year’s contest. Mr. Meyer spent time in the midst of harvest to talk to the kids about the importance of good tiling systems in fields due to the moisture holding capacity of Central Illinois soils. Tuscola FFA members have about a month to prepare for Section 17 Ag Sales contest on Thursday, Nov. 1. Wednesday, Sept. 26 FFA had the first chapter meeting with 42 members attending. Olivia Fulk is September’s Member of the Month. Congrats! Other upcoming FFA events to look forward to include: National FFA Convention in Indiana on Tuesday, Oct. 23 until Friday, Oct. 26, and Veterans Day Breakfast on Monday, Nov. 12.
