Erickson knocking on the door
By Lenny Sementi
Tuscola sophomore golfer Mathew Erickson has captured the medalist honor once already this year and loomed near the top of the leader board in all his other matches. The Warriors’ number one boy was knocking on the door again late last week on Thursday, Aug. 30 at Iron Horse where he finished third overall out of 35 golfers in a quadrangular meet with Altamont, Marshal and Mt. Zion.
Erickson was long off the tee most of the evening, and hit a monster drive down the middle on number four setting up a par on the toughest hole on the course en route to a 44, leading the Warriors to a third place finish in the team race. Tyler Bialeschki was next up for the boys in black penciling in a 49. Cory Dunn was not far behind playing as head coach Doug Baur’s number three, while Landon Banta rounded out the scoring for the boys. Brody Good and Colson Poffenberger toured the course as the alternates.
On tops for the Lady Warriors and in second place overall on the girls’ side was senior Claire Ring. Ring was solid writing in a 46 in her first competitive round of the week following cancelations earlier in the week due to excessive heat. The fourth-year player led Tuscola’s victory as a team with help from Lainey Banta and Whitney Root.
