Strong wind causes wreck on 1-57 Sunday

A strong gust of wind caused a personal injury accident in Douglas County around 11:50 a.m. Sunday, May 20.

According to the Illinois State Police preliminary investigation, Ryan P. Romero, 32, Bonfield, was northbound in the right lane of Interstate 57 near mile post 208 on a 2013 Harley Davidson Road Glide with passenger Ashley M. Romero, 30, Bonfield.

As a 2016 Chevrolet Impala driven by Johnathan B. Thompson, 30, Congerville, passed the couple on the motorcycle a strong cross wind blew across I-57 causing R. Romero to lose control of the bike as it side swiped the right rear of the Impala. The bike was laid on its side and slid along the roadway entering the median where it came to a rest. The driver and passenger were ejected from the bike as it slid and sustained serious injuries.

Interstate 57 northbound lanes were closed for a brief time to allow the Air Life Helicopter to land on scene. A. Romero was airlifted from the scene; R. Pomero was transported by ambulance from the scene.

Helmets were worn; no citations were issued.
