Letter: VFW plans Memorial Day observance

To the Editor:
On May 28, TK Martin Post 10009 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, with the gracious assistance of Douglas County American Legion Post 27, will be hosting the annual Memorial Day observance at the Tuscola Township Cemetery. The ceremony will kick off promptly at 1000 hours (10 a.m. for civilians) and will include the following speakers and performers: City Attorney Andrew Bequette as guest speaker; honorary chaplain, Rev. Jason Braaten of the Immanuel Lutheran Church; VFW Junior Vice Commander Jerry Jones as emcee; American Legion member Jenni Boyd performing the National Anthem; the 40 Martyrs Catholic Church Choir, under the director if Celeste Rogers, performing one or two songs; and the flag being lowered by VFW Commander Sean Conner, great nephew of the beloved Hop Conner who performed that service for so many years. We are especially honored to have two Tuscola Community High School students, Anna Spillman and Emily Kemp, concluding the ceremony with the playing of Taps. Any local organization which would like to be recognized, and to say a few words and place an appropriate item at the veterans memorial, is asked to contact Sean at 271-317-1036.

We hope to see everyone there (and we have a few surprises for them too!).
