He was born in Charleston, Ill., to Dr. Robert Burns and Mildred Matter Burns. At the age of 6 months he moved to Tuscola with his parents. His mother died when he was 5, and he lived with his maternal grandparents until his father married Lucille Coolman.
Dale married Martha Burns on July 17, 1949. They have a son, Dr. J. Richard Burns and his wife, Vickie of Moline; also a daughter, Barbara Kroenig and her husband, Mark, of St. Louis. They have five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. One granddaughter, Angela Burns, is deceased.
Dale retired from USI in Tuscola after 38 years. He will celebrate with his immediate family, but would welcome cards and phones calls.
