A second half spark helped the eighth grade girls’ basketball team past Shelbyville 48-33 in their first round of regional tournament action.
Kate Dean posted 16 points, Sophie Kremitzki added 11, and Taylor Musgrave had 10. Maddie Stahler put together six points, Kerri Pierce had three, and Kyla Gough added two.
“We started out flat in the first half,” said head coach Beth Pugh. “Shelbyville was out hustling us to lose balls, and that is not like us at all. Shelbyville had two really quick and good shooting guards. We made some adjustments at halftime, and the girls came out determined and focused defensively and turned the game around.”

EP-44; Paris Mayo-40
The Hornets earned their way to sectional play with a regional championship 44-40 win over Paris-Mayo.
Dean led again with 15 points, and Kremitzki contributed 12. Musgrave added seven points, Stahler posted four, and Abigail Pettry and Pierce had three points each.
“The eighth grade came out determined to win this game,” Pugh said. “They stayed focused for all four quarters. We knew we had to shut down their two main guards. We used a couple different defensive set ups to keep Mayo from getting in to a rhythm. Paris Mayo pressured us, which we had trouble with at times, but we regained our composure and beat their pressure.”
The Hornets will play in sectional action Wednesday, Dec. 6 at Marshall. They will take on the winner of Teutopolis vs Marshall.
